# Meso methodology

Meso is a rule-based engine that enforces evidence. Its 9-pillar framework maps every programming decision to peer-reviewed sports-science research. The live page (https://meso.fitness/methodology.html) carries the full citations with DOI links; this file summarizes the framework.

## The 9 pillars

1. **Block Periodization** — Training is organized into structured phases (accumulation → intensification → peak → deload) so that each block develops a specific quality and feeds the next.
2. **RPE / RIR Autoregulation** — Load is adjusted to daily readiness using Rate of Perceived Exertion / Reps in Reserve, rather than fixed percentages of a one-rep max.
3. **Volume Landmarks (MEV / MAV / MRV)** — Weekly hard-set volume per muscle group is audited against Minimum Effective Volume, Maximum Adaptive Volume, and Maximum Recoverable Volume.
4. **Stretch-Position Bias** — Exercise selection favors movements that load the target muscle in a lengthened position, which research associates with greater hypertrophy.
5. **Frequency & Split Design** — Each muscle is trained at least twice per week; splits are built to distribute volume across the week.
6. **Mandatory Deloads** — A deload week closes every cycle (volume down ~40–50%) to dissipate fatigue and allow supercompensation, with an early deload offered mid-cycle when readiness signals drop.
7. **Progressive Overload Schemes** — Every set is assigned a progression method: linear, double progression, wave loading, or RPE-based.
8. **Compound-First Ordering** — Exercises are sequenced compound-to-isolation within a session to prioritize the highest-skill, highest-load work while fresh.
9. **Training-Status Individualization** — Dose-response is scaled to the lifter's experience level (beginner / intermediate / advanced).

## How the engine applies them

1. **Context** — profile, injury history, recent RPE, and muscle priorities are gathered.
2. **Pool** — per-session exercise pools are filtered by equipment, contraindications, and split.
3. **Select** — an LLM selects and sequences exercises from the pool using that context.
4. **Audit** — a validator checks the plan against the pillars (volume within MEV–MRV, correct ordering, no redundancy) and retries until it passes.
5. **Persist** — the validated program is saved with each set's progression scheme assigned.
